An important week in Polish-Russian relations got off to a difficult start last Saturday when the German newspaper Bild reported that Russia has deployed Iskander missiles to Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave on the Baltic coast.
The newspaper claimed that the missiles, which are capable of being fitted with nuclear warheads can reach targets in the whole of Poland as well as Berlin. Both Russian and Polish officials tried to play down the report with the Russian Foreign Ministry claiming it caused unnecessary panic and the Polish Foreign Ministry, while admitting the development was “worrying”, said the reports were “exaggerated”.
