Members of New Zealand's House of Representatives, commonly called "Parliament", normally gain their parliamentary seats through nationwide general elections, or (less frequently) in by-elections. 

General elections normally occur at least every three years in New Zealand, and operate using the Mixed Member Proportional electoral system. The Chief Electoral Office and the Electoral Commission co-ordinate the electoral system.Local government politicians, including mayors, councillors and District Health Boards are voted in during the local elections, held every three years. These elections used both Single Transferable Vote and First Past the Post systems in 2007.
